Community Broadband

The people associated with Broadband Vantage (BbV) have been undertaking Community Broadband projects since before the company started.

Having developed the first local loop unbundling project and raised £150m in 1999, the principals went on to work for BT, UPC and have also worked with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, East Sussex County Council and others ensuring communities get access to the best Broadband services possible and, more lately, focusing on Next Generation Access and the ICT infrastructure to deliver it.

The company is currently working on a variety of community broadband NGA projects using a mixture of fibre and wireless technologies.

White Papers

Broadband Vantage has developed white papers on a range of topics relative to its expertise in Community Broadband, ICT infrastructure and Next Generation Access.

Two new white papers are available for download on the subject of Data Centres and Software as a service.

	Digital Region Digital Region is a £95m community broadband project to deliver Next Generation Access (NGA) to South Yorkshire using VDSL technology and sub loop unbundling. Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster Councils are shareholders in Digital Region with Yorkshire Forward originally acting as the agent for central government and European funding. BbV was retained by Yorkshire Forward in two phases to advise on the technical delivery and complete due diligence on the complex contracts between the parties. The project has been live since April 2009 and has started delivering community broadband within the South Yorkshire sub-region.

	ICT Active ICT Active was a publicly funded community broadband project to improve the ICT infrastructure of multi-tenanted business properties (Business Centres and Science Parks) and enable Next Generation Access. The project set up an accreditation and marketing programme to ensure that properties had the appropriate ICT infrastructure to deliver Next Generation Access to tenants. Over 100 properties were surveyed and accredited as suitable for occupancy by ICT intensive users. BbV was responsible for marketing the programme to nationally based organisations and co-wrote the first draft of the BSI Standard PAS700 which underpinned the accreditation programme.

	BECTA – Home Access Readiness Pilot Home Access was a community broadband project designed to improve educational outcomes by ensuring school students had access to the appropriate ICT infrastructure and Next Generation Access. The Readiness pilot was run in Oldham and Suffolk councils and used a balanced scorecard to report on the level of penetration of the appropriate ICT infrastructure. BbV supported the project by providing technical and industry input.
